Frankly, what unconscious mind could have imagined, even for a few seconds, France's failure in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup? Once again, coach Didier Deschamps and his team benefited from a favorable draw.

Winners on Friday evening over Azerbaijan (3-0), the Blues are at the top of Group D with nine points, or three victories in as many matches. This is not an achievement given the opponents in this group of four, well up to the finalists of the 2022 World Cup.

Monday evening in Iceland, a tricolor victory will be enough, combined with a failure for Ukraine against Azerbaijan, to obtain the ticket for the World Cup organized next year (June 11 to July 19, 2026) in three countries: United States, Mexico and Canada.

Real Madrid must be annoyed with Didier Deschamps

The potential qualification will be contested without Kylian Mbappé. The captain and leading striker of the France team was injured at the Parc des Princes against the Azerbaijanis. Author of the opener at the end of the first period (1-0, 45th + 2), the Real Madrid center forward left in the 83rd minute.

Kylian Mbappé, 26, complained of his right ankle, the same one that forced him to leave his Real Madrid comrades last weekend during a Spanish Championship match against Villarreal (3-1, 83rd minute).

The Blues have enough offensive power to do without Mbappé and win in Iceland, beaten on Friday at home by Ukraine (3-5)
