Thanks to its success validated Wednesday against Australia (1-3), England qualified for the final of the 2023 World Cup.

They hold it. For the first time in their history, the English will play a World Cup final. To reach the step of the semi-finals, the “Lionesses” had to get rid of Australia this Wednesday, on the side of Sydney (1-3). But in front of their public, the locals hoped to disrupt the English machine and just before the match, the atmosphere of the Olympic Stadium led to believe that the feat of the “Matildas” was possible. Unfortunately for Sam Kerr and his partners, the reality on the ground quickly caught up with them.

The English steamroller quickly got going and the first period demonstrated the technical quality and possession of Sarina Wiegman’s players. As a result, it was the latter who logically opened the scoring in the thirty-sixth minute of play, on an achievement by Ella Toone (0-1). Enough to join the locker room with some confidence for the future.

Kerr wasn’t enough

But it was perhaps a little too quickly to forget that in the Australian ranks was one of the best attackers of her time. And on a well-rounded solitary counter, Sam Kerr scored a goal with precision that overwhelmed the Australian public with joy (1-1, 63rd). A joy that was ultimately quite short-lived since on an action that seemed innocuous a priori, Ellie Carpenter got her brushes tangled up and allowed Lauren Hemp to restore the advantage to the “Lionesses” (1-2, 71st).

Another blow to the head of the Australians before a third and final strike this time by Alessia Russo, at the conclusion of a counter-assassin (1-3, 86th). On Sunday (12 noon), in the same Olympic Stadium in Sydney, Spain and England will face off in the final. One of these two nations will win the first World Cup in its history.
