Gérard Lopez, another disaster

The verdict fell for Boavista. Relegated sportingly in the second division and then administratively demoted at the amateur level, the Portuguese club formalized its liquidation on Friday via a press release. This decision was acted by the assembly of creditors, mainly favorable to this outcome. Property of Gérard Lopez, also president of the Girondins de Bordeaux, the club, however, announced its intention to appeal.

This liquidation seals the refusal of the one month's additional period requested by the management to present a recovery plan. It occurs after years of financial difficulties: Boavista has been prohibited for recruitment five times on the last six Mercatos and has even seen its private electricity stadium for unpaid invoices.

It is a dark page for one of the historic clubs in Portugal. Champion in 2001, Boavista remains the only club to have broken the hegemony of the Benfica – Porto – Sporting trio. Despite this descent into hell, some supporters have already reacted by announcing the creation of a new team in the colors of Boavista, in order to preserve the identity of the club.

Like an already seen

For Gérard Lopez, this bankruptcy is added to an already long list of setbacks. In 2022, his Belgian Mouscron club had already disappeared from the professional landscape. And in France, the Girondins de Bordeaux, which he directs, experienced a dizzying fall, going from Ligue 1 to National 2 in just two years.

The Luxembourg businessman has also dragged a complicated reputation since his departure from the LOSC, left debt in winter 2021. With the failure of Boavista, the management of Gérard Lopez is again pointed out.
