Canal+ is preparing for its release. Historical broadcaster of the hexagonal championship, the audiovisual group should shine by its absence during the next call for tenders for the TV rights of Ligue 1, scheduled by the LFP on September 12. The encrypted channel has been furious with the league since 2021. It pays two matches for 332 million euros per season, while Amazon, after Mediapro’s withdrawal, got the rest for 250 million.
C+ has tied up this new agreement with DAZN which speaks volumes. Since Saturday, the channel of the streaming site is available on myCanal. The “Netflix of sport” broadcasts the Belgian championship, the Women’s Champions League or the United States women’s championship. But the deal of around 10 million euros above all allows DAZN to recover the two L1 matches held by Canal + for co-broadcasting.
15 euros for Ligue 1
The Team, in its Sunday edition, looks back on the negotiations between the various players. Canal+ had bought the rights to these two matches from beIN Sports and obtained the agreement of its Qatari partner. The three companies then asked the LFP, but the latter did not want to comment. Canal+ then found a solution, by creating a digital channel (Canal+ Ligue 1) which is available on the DAZN web platform against 9.99 euros the first month and 14.99 euros thereafter.
In short, DAZN is entering the French football landscape and could thus participate in the bidding rounds organized by the LFP in a month. The service of English origin could then offer Ligue 1 matches both on its platform and via its new partner Canal+. But without Canal as a real broadcaster, the president of the league Vincent Labrune could not reach his goal of one billion euros. Suspense…
