Free since leaving Olympique de Marseille, Dimitri Payet should make the choice to join the Brazilian championship. A three-year contract awaits him at Vasco da Gama.

The “here we go” has been launched. After L’Equipe, it is Fabrizio Romano’s turn to confirm the news. Dimitri Payet is on track to join Vasco da Gama, since a contract until 2026 awaits him in Rio de Janeiro.

The former captain of Olympique de Marseille had been free for a few weeks. He could have gone to Saudi Arabia, like so many others. He could have discovered a new European championship, after his successful spell at West Ham a few years ago. The former French international could also stay in France, where an interest from Nantes and Rennes was mentioned, but this last option was unthinkable for the player, for a question of respect for OM.

And here is Payet on his way to Brazil. To measure how original and surprising this choice is, the Reunionese will only be the second player to play in the Brazilian first division after Danlaba Mendy, who played at Grêmio, in Porto Alegre, in 1998.

Vasco da Gama (and not Vasco da Gama) has just returned to the Brazilian Serie A, but has suffered since the start of the season with only 3 wins in 17 days, and 19th place out of 20 in the standings. In the club’s workforce, we currently find the Chilean Gary Medel or Alex Teixeira, the attacking midfielder who passed through Shakthar Donetsk.
