From Carlos Mozer, “Libero Boucher” of the Bernard Tapie era, to a Brandao who ensures that he “Not touched”passing by the Grand Luiz Gustavo or the Bide Doria, OM welcomed 27 Brazilian players in its history. Igor Peaceao, the winger recruited for 35 million euros (bonus included) from the Feyenoord, is the 28th. No other foreign country has given so many players to OM. In the great history of the Marseille club, the very first Brazilian is a sacred myth.

Jaguaré is a goalkeeper who has visibly revolutionized the
futebol in his country. Vasco Da Gama and Brazilian international player (in addition to being a docker in the port of Rio de Janeiro), he would have popularized the use of gloves in Brazil. According to the legend, he had released a ball from a bicycle long before the scorpion of the Colombian RenĂ© Higuita. Still according to legend, he was nicknamed “black spider” during his visit to FC Barcelona, from 1932 to 1933.

We are therefore before the Second World War (1939-1945) and Jaguaré Bezerra de Vasconcelos landed by boat in Marseille in 1936. An extravagant hair, it became the darling of the brand new Vélodrome stadium. He was crowned champion of France in 1937 (the first title in the history of the club) and won the 1983 French Cup. During an OM-Sète, he entered the annals of the hexagonal championship since he marks on penalty (12 goalkeepers marked in D1 throughout history). Better still, during the match, the Héraultais are missing two penos!

Jaguarine alcoholic, ruined and beaten to death …

In 1939, “the Jaguar” of the sky and white supporters flee Marseille for fear of an imminent war. Back in Rio, he plays Sao Cristovao, future Ronaldo training club “Il Fenomeno”, but his sports career stops quickly. Alcoholism ruins it. JaguarĂ© resumes his job as a docker and his colleagues do not believe a word in his story of Seleçao, “black spider” or pastis. He died at the age of 41 tragicly. The former goalkeeper would have been beaten to death by police officers …

The incredible story of Jaguaré is told in The 50 best OM players (Editions Scotty), a book written by Fabrice Lampeti, journalist at Provence.
