OM, a welcome surprise

Valentin Rongier has given up his OM captain’s armband. Marcelino, the new Olympian coach, entrusted him to a player who was not really expected.

He has 33 matches in Ligue 2, six more than his record among the elite, all played with OM. Samuel Gigot is no less legitimate to wear the jersey of Olympique de Marseille. Quite the contrary.

The small revolution wrought by the arrival this summer of Marcelino has given depth to the French central defender. The new Olympian coach entrusted him with the armband, around the arm of Valentin Rongier last season.

Samuel Gigot, captain of OM, we didn’t really see him coming. Against Bayer Leverkusen (1-2), Marseille’s last preparation match played on August 2, the former Spartak Moscow (2018-2022) had already inherited the armband.

The second, more convincing clue, the presence of Gigot in a press conference, on the eve of Panathinaikos-OM, 3rd preliminary round first leg of the Champions League.

On Wednesday evening, the native of Avignon (like a certain Eric di Meco) will lead the Marseille troops on the lawn of the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium in Athens.

A child from Provence, captain of OM, after Steve Mandanda, Dimitri Payet and Valentin Rongier, that’s enough to satisfy Marseille supporters. All that’s missing are the good results.
