Former US President Donald Trump has mocked Megan Rapinoe for her missed penalty against Sweden at the Women’s World Cup.
Rapinoe, 38, who was making his 202nd appearance for the USWNT and will retire at the end of the season, saw his shot go over the crossbar in the round of 16 game Sunday, with the USWNT being eliminated by Sweden in the penalty shootout.
Sophia Smith and Kelley O’Hara also failed to score their shot on goal. Lina Hurtig’s game-winning shot for Sweden grazed the line after being partially cleared by Alyssa Naeher. The four-time world champions were knocked out at the earliest stage of the competition in their history.
Many conservative figures chose to mock Rapinoe and the USWNT after their loss because of their “woke” views. The team had been criticized for remaining silent rather than singing the national anthem before each game.
Trump and Rapinoe, who is gay and an activist for LGBTQ+ rights and gender equality, have a long feud that dates back to when she was one of the first sports stars to kneel during the anthem nationwide to protest police brutality in 2017.
“The ‘shocking and totally unexpected’ loss of the USA women’s soccer team to Sweden is quite emblematic of what is happening to our once great nation under the rule of crooked Joe Biden,” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday evening.
“Many of our players were openly hostile to America. Almost no other country has behaved in this way. Nice shot Megan, USA go to hell!!! », he wrote.
