After a penalty shootout, Arsenal won the Community Shield on Sunday at Wembley, against Manchester City, which remains on a historic hat-trick.
After losing against Leicester and Liverpool, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City failed in a third Community Shield in a row, Sunday at Wembley, against Arsenal (1-1, 4 tab to 1). The English champion, author of an exceptional hat-trick by also winning the FA Cup and the Champions League, thus misses his 4th title of the year.
The Cityzens however found the fault 15 minutes from the end, on a superb strike signed Cole Palmer (77th), who had replaced a silent Erling Haaland. But the Gunners pushed to the end and a deflected strike from Leandro Trossard turned into an equalizer in the 101st minute! The game went directly to penalties. Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri missed their attempt, before the “peno” of victory signed Fabio Vieira.
Mikel Arteta, facing his mentor Pep Guardiola, offers himself a 3rd title as a coach, after the 2020 FA Cup (against Chelsea) and the 2020 Community Shield (against Liverpool, already in the penalty shootout). He has never lost a final. Note, on the London side, the excellent performance of the French international William Saliba in defense, both in the duels and in the recovery.
