Friends supporters of Marseille, Monaco, Lyon, Lille, Nice or Strasbourg. You may be wondering what would happen in Ligue 1 if Paris Saint-Germain were to win the Champions League.

In the group stage at 36 teams, there is a place of reserved for the winner of the C1 of the previous season, in case. As PSG already has its own, thanks to its title of champion of France, the fourth or the fifth of Ligue 1 could recover this precious ticket to the most prestigious and lucrative of European competitions?

This is not what UEFA provides. In this case, which should still occur this season (PSG, Arsenal and Barça have assured their place in C1, not yet Inter), the post for the group stage is finally allocated to a club in front of playing the barrage of the Champions Way. The best classified in UEFA ranking. In the current state of things, he should return to Bodo/Glimt, crowned Norway champion, and now 42nd in the UEFA ranking.

And for the Europa League, then?

In recent seasons, with the previous format, Ligue 1 has been impacted by the identity of the Europa League winner (automatically qualified for the Champions League the following season). If the C3 winner already had his ticket for the C1, he left his place in the group stage in the third in Ligue 1, which thus avoided the perilous dams. In 2020-2021, Stade Rennais had been able to thank FC Seville for this little gift.

With the new format, it's more complex. The ticket returns to the best classified club among those in front of playing the preliminary towers. For Ligue 1, it would be better than it was Lille (30th) who finished fourth in the championship, and that Benfica (15th) does not finish second in the Portuguese championship. Ditto for Feyenoord (26th) for third place in the Netherlands.

Note however that among the four semi-finalists of the Europa League, only Bilbao is able to qualify for the Champions League via its championship. This is not the case for Tottenham, Manchester United and Bodo/Glimt. So it is good that the Basque club that Ligue 1 residents must encourage.
