Barça, the terrible drama

A moving minute of silence was observed at the Olympic stadium Llluis-Concomes, on the heights of Montjuïc, before the meeting of FC Barcelona against the Celta of Vigo on Saturday. The stadium screens displayed the photo of the Spanish family who died during the recent helicopter accident in New York. And the TV realization focused on relatives of the crying victims installed in the official stands just before President Joan Laporta …

Agustin Escobar, Managing Director of Siemens Mobility, his wife Mercè Camprubi Montal and their three children Augustin, 10, Mercedes, 8, and Victor, 4, had just started their holidays in the “Big Apple” when they flew above Hudson River to discover Manhattan seen from the sky and approach the statue of freedom. A propeller detached, for an unknown reason for the moment, and the machine has rushed into the water. The pilot, an ex-Navy Seals, 36, lost his life.

The mother Mercè Camprubi Montal is directly linked to Barça. It is indeed the granddaughter of Agusti Montal Costa, president of the FCB from 1969 to 1977, and the great-granddaughter of Agusti Montal I Galobart, president of the club from 1964 to 1952. Agusti Montal Costa hired Johan Cruyff in 1973 and the Blaurganas were crowned Spanish champion the following year, after 14 years of scarcity. The Dutch superstar has completely changed the club's face. He won only one Spanish Cup in addition, in 1978, but remained linked to FCB before becoming the legendary coach, winner of 4 titles of Spanish champion (1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994) and the first Cup of Champions of Champions of History in 1992, with his Dream Team.

AGUSTI MONTAL I GALOBART is at the origin of the Grand Barça in the early 1950s (the Barça of the 5 Cups in 1952, with the Liga, the King's Cup and the Super Cup). It was also the president who decided to leave the Corts stadium (an enclosure of 60,000 seats in the district of the same name), by buying the land which allowed the construction of Camp Nou in 1954.

It was thus the father and mother of Mercè Camprubi Montal who were thus in the stands, invited by the club, in the company of the brother and sister of the deceased. Brother Joan Camprubi Montal, engineer and businessmen in life, is a candidate for the presidency of FC Barcelona. He is the main opponent of Laporta …
