Soon the end of an era? The most capped player in the history of Bayern Munich with 741 meetings on the clock, Thomas Müller will leave his club forever at the end of the season. Now 35 years old, the German attacking midfielder will no longer wear the Bavarian team jersey beyond this summer. Indeed, to believe KickerBayern would not offer an extension to its emblematic number 25, whose contract expires in June.
The Bavarian club, anxious to clean up its finances, should not keep Thomas Müller who is now experiencing his 17th season with the Rekordmeister. With the non-prolongation of right-handers, Bayern will save more than 20 million euros per season. However, the attacking midfielder would have liked to stay one more season in his lifelong club, but he was informed during the international break of the decision of his leaders.
Promoted as a first team in August 2008 by Jürgen Klinsmann and then definitively launched by Louis Van Gaal in the 2009-2010 season, the German striker marked the history of his heart club. Since then, he has wore the colors of Bayern 741 times. With 247 goals scored in 17 years, he is the third best director of the club behind Gerd Müller (570) and Robert Lewandowski (344). He even occupied the head of the best passenger ranking with 266 offerings, far ahead of Franck Ribéry (182).
What future for Müller?
Unfortunately for Müller, these figures will not be improved. Especially since today, the veteran must be satisfied with a different role, namely that of a leader in the locker room. He is doomed to play less and less in the team of Vincent Kompany. And it is no coincidence that the 2014 world champion has only holded 8 times in 23 Bundesliga matches this season (1 goal, 3 assists).
It remains to be seen which decision could make the player: put an end to his career and remain one of the few players to have honored the colors of a single club or join the MLS. Regardless of his choice, Bayern plans to say goodbye worthy of the name and wishes to offer him a role in the organization chart if he came to hang up the crampons.
