The shot of Julian Alvarez made react. On Wednesday evening, Atlético de Madrid received Real Madrid on the sidelines of the round of 16 return from the Champions League. At the end of the suspense, the Merengues eliminated the Colchoneros (1-0, 2-4 TAB). During the penalty shootout, a playing fact made: the cancellation of the shot to the goal of Julian Alvarez after the latter touched the ball twice while sliding. If some believe that Szymon Marciniak's decision was influenced by Real Madrid players, notably Kylian Mbappé, the referee delivered his version of the facts to him.
“Did Mbappé told the referees that Alvarez touched him twice?” It is not at all true. It was I who informed the Var referees that there was a 99% chance that there was a double contact from Alvarez, and they checked it well. To be honest, I have never been confronted with such a situation in my career as a referee ”he explains in remarks relayed by AS and Marca. Marciniak's decision was even validated by UEFA. “Although minimal, the player hit the ball with his support foot before shooting”wrote the body in a press release published Thursday.
Atlético not convinced
UEFA's decision obviously did not convince Atlético de Madrid which split a statement on Thursday evening.
“We are aware that, even if the error is proven, the result of the match will not be changed. But we deeply regret this “incident” (term used by UEFA) and the terrible consequences he had for us. The hope of millions of fans and the spectacular efforts of our team were ruined. The football family must work by being united to avoid new situations like this ”. Words that will not change anything.
