Paulo Fonseca received a heavy sentence for his blood blow to referee Benoît Millot during the Lyon-Brest match (2-1). The Gones coach was suspended nine months, until November 30, with a ban on access to the locker room until September 15.

The Portuguese technician, however, benefits from the support of his playersas well as certain players in the football landscape. Among them, Jürgen Klopp, director of football activities at Red Bull.

“It's an exaggerated sanction”

The former manager of Liverpool, recognized for his fiery and energetic temperament, estimated that the sanction imposed on Fonseca was excessive. He spoke of similar behavior on his part towards the referees, without suffering such consequences.

“I did what I did. I saw that Paulo Fonseca had been suspended nine months. You will easily find sequences where I behaved in the same way with the referees. Between an absence of red card and nine months of suspension, there is a world of gap. It is an exaggerated sanction. When I see that, I am really happy not to find myself in these situations ”said the German at the ten -year ceremony of the Hout Bay Football Community in South Africa.
