The hour of the round of 16 rang. In this new version of the Champions League, there has already been damage before the draw organized this afternoon by UEFA. Italy has lost no less than three representatives (Atalanta, AC Milan and Juventus), France has managed to keep half of its contingent (PSG, Lille), but finds itself more than ever threatened in the index UEFA by the Dutch who also have two clubs still in the running (PSV, Feyenoord).
The suspense will not be really total since, as a reminder, each committed club will only have the choice between two possible opponents. On the French side, Paris Saint-Germain will inherit whatever happens of a big piece, namely Liverpool or FC Barcelona. Ile-de-France residents may want to avoid the leader in the Premier League classification, especially since they proved last season as they were able to release the Blaugranas (2-3, 4-1 in the quarterfinals). For their part, Reds and Blaugranas will no doubt pray to shoot Benfica instead of Paris.
Another French representative in this competition, Lille will take advantage of her seeded status (the Dogues have qualified directly for the eighth) and will benefit from a slightly more lenient draw. It will be the Bruges club or Borussia Dortmund for the DOGUES. And if the LOSC came across the Belgians, it could face … PSG in quarters. Finally, Real Madrid, holding the title, could afford a Madrid derby against Atlético. Or confront the defending German champion, the Bayer Leverkusen of Xabi Alonso. For information, the round trips will be played on March 4 and 5 and returns on March 11 and 12.
