Despite the notable recovery in results over the last week, rumors in the corridors suggest that certain internal tensions persist at Paris Saint-Germain. One of them concerns an experienced player, whose gradual sidelining by Luis Enrique raises questions.

The unexpected sidelining

The identity of this player is none other than Marco Asensio, the former Real Madrid striker. Arriving with great fanfare at PSG last summer, the Spaniard now seems to be completely losing momentum under the orders of his compatriot Luis Enrique. His non-call-up for the trip to Lens in the Coupe de France, while he was operational, marked a new turning point.

Since November 22, when he had already suffered reprimands in front of the locker room after the match against Toulouse, Asensio has only played 18 minutes in three matches. His last appearance dates back to the trip to Auxerre at the beginning of December.

Questionable choices by Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique justified his choice after the Lens match : “I took the best prepared players for this match.” A statement which suggests that Asensio’s investment, in the eyes of the coach, could be insufficient. However, this situation seems incomprehensible to those around the player, especially since he had started a series of starts two months ago in a “false 9” role. At least that’s what Le Parisien reports in today’s edition.

With the return to form of Gonçalo Ramos and the integration of young players like Ibrahim Mbaye, Asensio finds himself facing fierce competition.

An uncertain future for the Spaniard

Under contract until 2026, Marco Asensio could see his future at PSG called into question from the winter. Although the club has not officially placed him on the transfer list, his low playing time raises doubts. This gradual distancing suggests a difficult divide to bridge between him and his trainer. The player will have to take advantage of the coming weeks to regain Luis Enrique’s trust, or consider a departure elsewhere.
