According to information from L’Equipe, PSG were close to signing Ukrainian defender Ilya Zabarnyi, a promising talent from Bournemouth. However, the club ultimately abandoned this operation due to the presence of Safonov in the squad, and geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine. A decision which immediately caused an outcry on social networks.

Parisian supporters were quick to express their anger, denouncing management deemed inconsistent and unfair. “It is not Safonov who is responsible for the situation in Ukraine,” claim some Internet users. Others are outraged to see the club refuse a transfer for political considerations, accusing PSG of mixing issues outside football.
