A former Madrilenian discusses the reasons for his departure from the Merengue club.

After a brilliant Copa América 2024 with Colombia, James Rodriguez made his return to sunny Madrid by signing for Rayo Vallecano. The 33-year-old attacking midfielder, little used by his coach Inigo Pérez, recently looked back on his time at Casa Blanca, full of some regrets.

“When I arrived in Madrid, people remembered me with great affection. This means that I did things well and that I have a lot of affection for the madridistas. They made me feel at home. I was able to win titles and I think I performed very well”he recalled for Marca.

The unfinished Madrid dream

Between 2014 and 2020, James wore the Real Madrid jersey, with a two-season break on loan to Bayern Munich (2017-2019). But for the former child prodigy of Cucuta, this adventure with the Whites could have lasted longer.

“Maybe I could have stayed a year or two longer and my stats could have been a little higher. But at the time, due to certain circumstances, they didn’t let me stay and that’s what happened. But I think I could have stayed two or three more years,” judged the star of the Tricolor.
