It has been suggested that Barca will look for a striker who can play as an alternative to Lewandowski next season, with free agent Jonathan David emerging as an obvious candidate. The fact that he is free makes him a much cheaper alternative than many other options, and Sport say that Barcelona are aware that David is prepared to play second fiddle to Lewandowski at first, staking a claim as his replacement possible. The board were, however, surprised by his comments about being a Barcelona fan, which they took as pressure to try and force the Blaugrana club’s hand.
The Catalans are aware that David already has three offers on the table from the Premier League for next season, when his contract at Lille expires. The total package to sign him, including a five-year contract, a signing bonus and a fee for his agent, will amount to 80 million euros, which Barcelona do not consider excluded.
80 million for David
Doubts over David’s signing are linked to his play. The 24-year-old striker thrives in spaces and knows how to use his speed, but the Catalans fear the deeper defenses Barcelona face in La Liga will not cause him difficulties. Aware that time is running out, Barcelona will make a decision in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, in Germany, Florian Plettenberg has confirmed that Bayern Munich are interested in David, as an alternative to Harry Kane. Inter and Juventus have been heavily linked with David in the past, but the SkySports DE journalist claims no deal is close with the Nerazzurri.
