Interviewed by RTL, 98 world champion Lilian Thuram spoke about the dramatic situation in France’s overseas territories.

Retired from the field and without professional obligations, Lilian Thuram spends his life between the Paris region, Italy (his eldest Marcus plays at Inter, his younger brother Khéphren at Juventus) and Guadeloupe, his native island. The 98 world champion is very affected by the situation in the overseas territories, where there is total protest against the high cost of living. He thus asks the French State to “find solutions”even if
“the state may be unable to intervene”
since economic problems have existed for around fifteen years in Martinique, Guadeloupe and Guyana.

Thuram explained to RTL Matin: “The high cost of living overseas is a feeling shared by many West Indians. On these issues in the West Indies, we do not take the time to analyze them and understand that it tells something about France. Perhaps we need to question the economic system in which we live. If you are on an island, it is more visible to question this ultra-liberalism, the prices are extremely expensive, people have a lot of difficulty living. It’s completely normal that people might find it unfair and say so.”.

Thuram: “There is a feeling of abandonment”

Faced with this situation which is getting worse from year to year, Thuram, who will ” often “ in Guadeloupe, wonders how the population does not growl more against big businesses and especially against the government of the Metropolis. “There is a feeling of abandonment and above all of disrespect. Very often, we West Indians ask ourselves the question of whether we are really French and that is extremely serious, it is completely legitimate to ask the question.assures the one who was born in Pointe-à-Pitre and arrived at the age of nine in the Paris suburbs.

And to the former rock (142 caps, two goals) and captain of the France team to conclude: “it’s very easy for me to feel French, I played for the French team, I proudly wore the colors of France, I am extremely proud to be French, that’s why I am also extremely sad that we cannot resolve certain problems.”
