Lewandowski is still playing at an elite level and remains one of the most prolific goalscorers in football. Since joining Barcelona from Bayern Munich in 2022, he has continued to put in extraordinary performances and, this season alone, he has scored 19 goals in 17 matches in all competitions, proving his worth to a Barca team who are currently six points clear at the top of La Liga.
However, the seasoned striker is realistic about the future. In an interview with Forbes, Lewandowski admitted: “ At my age now, I know that soon – two, three years, I don’t know exactly – it will be done, it will be over.”
Although his contract with Barcelona runs until 2026, with an option to extend for another year, Lewandowski stressed that he will walk away from the sport when he feels the fire within him is out.
Two years, no more
“I mean, and only me, not anyone else, when will the end be?” he declared. “ When I wake up one day and feel like I don’t want to go to practice, that will be the first moment to start thinking about retirement.”
Yet he doesn’t feel the need to move away. “ Every morning when I wake up – and I hope it stays that way – I feel no pain. And I always have the feeling that I like going to training, to the club”, he shared.
Barcelona, recognizing Lewandowski’s eventual departure, began to identify potential successors. Sporting director Deco recently mentioned players like Victor Gyokeres and Erling Haaland as possible candidates to take the Polish striker’s place.
“I think it is very difficult to find a striker like Robert today. There are one or two at this level. Maybe Haaland or someone else”he told Mundo Deportivo. “Gyokeres is a good player, he has been scoring goals for a long time in Portugal, we know him like others but he is not our priority at the moment and we are not looking for a number nine to replace Robert because we want he stays happy, scores goals and stays at least one more season. »
