Positive information fell on Friday for the short-term future of Olympique de Marseille.

Long awaited, the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport fell on Friday. The body has canceled the recruitment ban imposed by FIFA on Olympique de Marseille following the transfer of Pape Gueye, bought by Watford before joining the Marseille club in 2020. Very good news for the short-term future of OM, which has therefore won its case.

Another winner of this CAS verdict: Watford. The British club will receive compensation of 2.6 million euros. Watford had filed an appeal with FIFA, in the winter of 2021, to challenge the progress of this affair, after having acquired the player a year earlier before seeing him slip away to Olympique de Marseille in stride, a few months later.

Good news for OM, less for Gueye

On the other hand, Pape Gueye did not benefit from the same leniency from the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Olympique de Marseille midfielder expected to see his sanction in the first instance reduced, after having received a 4-month suspension. But it won’t. Gueye will be suspended for 4 months from the start of official competitions, ie at the beginning of August. A small downside in this case for Olympique de Marseille.
