Genoa should soon officially finalize the recruitment of Mario Balotelli, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The legendary former Italy international has a new club after four months without activity. Balotelli left Adana Demirspor for the second time this summer and has been without an employer since July.

However, ‘Super Mario’ is set to finally return to Serie A. Although it has been known for some time that Genoa were in talks to sign him, there was no guarantee that the deal would go through due to the poor start of the club’s season, also threatening the position of Alberto Gilardino.

The coach was the one who pushed most to sign his former Italian teammate and not only did Gilardino survive, but the deal is now close to being done, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Italian transfer expert reports that Balotelli has been waiting for 20 days to get the green light to finalize his transfer, with Genoa taking their time to decide whether or not to proceed.

Green light for Super Mario

The Serie A outfit is in need of a new owner following the collapse of 777 Partners and club bosses need to be frugal with their spending at present. Balotelli, however, agreed to join the club on a significantly reduced salary, earning only €200,000-300,000 during the duration of his contract, which runs until July.

The 34-year-old hasn’t played in Serie A for several years, but the eccentric striker recently insisted he could still ” crush » the championship during an argument with a Twitch streamer.

The former Liverpool and Manchester City striker will struggle to keep Genoa in the elite of Italian football. The oldest club in the country is currently 18th in the standings.
