Thibaut Courtois had remained silent for just over three weeks since the derby at the Metropolitano, where objects and lighters were thrown at him from the Frente Atlético stands, causing the match to be stopped for several minutes. Having had time to think about the matter and following Simeone’s accusations that the Belgian had provoked the public, the Real Madrid goalkeeper spoke out on Tuesday.
Courtois responds to Simeone
“I respect Simeone’s opinion, but I do not share it. We have different ideas about what constitutes provocation. The governing bodies have made their decision, and I do not wish to make any further comments.“, said the goalkeeper about the Atlético de Madrid coach’s comments.
Courtois also had a thought regarding ultras in response to the next question, just after declaring that he would not comment further on the subject. For him, a healthy rivalry is acceptable and he enjoys the chants and jokes between the players and the public, like the one he experienced with the Atlético supporters, but he warns that there is no limit to violence.
“The important thing is that there is no violence. In Belgium, I saw things like that, there is a strong ultra culture. I have no problem with those who support their team and create rivalry, nor with the fiery derbies and the good atmospheres… I like that, it gives me more adrenaline to play in these conditions with such chants, but always with respect for those on the ground“, he explained, insisting: “Sometimes there are jokes between the player and the fans, and I don’t mind if they sing afterwards.”
