PSG: Luis Enrique does not boast before the shock against PSV

Having once again become leader of the Ligue 1 rankings after their big victory against Strasbourg (4-2), Paris Saint-Germain prepared rather well for their Champions League match against PSV on Tuesday evening. Luis Enrique’s men are indeed expected to turn the corner after their defeat at Arsenal (0-2). Nineteenth in the C1 mini championship standings, the capital club is obliged to win at the Parc. The reason is very simple: after this match, Paris will challenge Atlético de Madrid, Bayern Munich, Salzburg and Manchester City.

Suffice to say that if PSG fails against PSV, the chances of qualifying for the top 8 or the play-offs (teams ranked from 9th to 24th place, editor’s note) will not be high. Wouldn’t this match against the Batavians be the most important for the European future of the Ile-de-France residents? “The next match is always the most important because it’s the one you can control. With the current Champions League format, every home game has even more importance. But it is also important for PSV. Throughout the matches, we all need to score points. We are going to play with a lot of motivation”confided Luis Enrique at a press conference.

PSV held in high esteem

As usual, the Spanish coach refuses to dramatize the stakes of a meeting. But there is also no question of showing too much optimism in the face of a club that is more affordable than the three other behemoths mentioned above and which remains with a draw and a defeat in C1 (against Sporting CP and Juventus). Because Luis Enrique did not miss PSV’s perfect start to the season in the Eredivisie (leader of the standings after 9 wins in 9 matches, 29 goals scored, 6 conceded). “It’s difficult to assess the level of PSV. You can guess its general level. You also have to see at home or away, that changes everything. He is a very high level rival. In their championship they have incredible numbers. It’s going to be a difficult match. It’s going to be a match similar to the one against Strasbourg”he declared, before continuing.

“They play far from their goal, they put a lot of pressure on them. This is a team that dares with the ball. They play with Luuk de Jong, the wingers. They know how to play very well with the ball, know how to defend very well. (…) The Dutch school plays very good football. They know what to do with the ball. They know how to do it in different ways. They are very good defensively. I really like the Dutch style which is unique. (…) We will have to show our best defensive version to win against this team. » But PSG already knows that. The reigning French champions remain in five consecutive matches having conceded at least one goal and since the start of the season, they have only achieved two clean sheets (against Montpellier and Girona) in ten matches.
