Chelsea star Wesley Fofana has defended his France team-mate Kylian Mbappé after rumors swirled that he partied at a Swedish nightclub.

The Real Madrid star was not included in the France squad for the Nations League matches against Israel and Belgium because coach Didier Deschamps wanted to give him more time to be “100% fit” . The 25-year-old was reportedly spotted at a Stockholm nightclub as France beat Israel 4-1 on Thursday. While some have criticized the former Paris Saint-Germain star, his compatriot Fofana has come to his rescue, saying “he does what he wants”.

He told reporters: “People can do whatever they want with their free time. It’s not something we (the French team) talked about today, I hadn’t heard of this story. He does what he wants, he’s a great guy and a great professional. Are we doing too much? I don’t know. He’s the best French player, so it’s normal that it’s highly publicized. I think from time to time (the media) go a little too far. You should ask Kylian Mbappé for more information. »

“The media goes too far”

Mbappé finally made his blockbuster move from PSG to Madrid this summer, but the 2018 World Cup winner has not been as impressive as many would have hoped. He has scored seven goals in 11 matches this season, including three from the penalty spot. And when things don’t go as well as expected, players of Mbappé’s fame can be treated harsher than others, rightly or not.

While Mbappé will soon prepare for Real Madrid’s next round of matches, his France team will travel to Belgium in the Nations League on Monday evening.
