Aymeric Laporte is currently enjoying the glory days of the Spanish national team, with whom he notably won the last Euro. But, the Basque could have played with the French team, his native country.
Three years ago, the former Man City player chose to change his sporting nationality. A decision that he does not regret at all because he believes that it was impossible for him to continue with the Blues. The reason? The presence of Didier Deschamps on the French bench.
“If I went to the French team and then didn’t go there again, it was more because of personal relationships that didn’t work out,” he confided in an interview with RMC Sport.
Laporte exchanged sweet words with Deschamps
“I couldn’t wait any longer than that, he continued. The years passed and, in the end, it was always the same coach. If I wanted to play international competitions, I had to make decisions. And I had to make this choice. Today I am very happy and I feel very good in this Spain team. It suits me, also in terms of personality.”
Called to elaborate on the nature of his dispute with DD, the native of Agen retorted: “We had exchanges on several occasions which were not necessarily the gentlest. But it’s over, I don’t even think about it anymore. Everyone goes their own way.”
