A pure product of the Lyon team, Maxence Caqueret experienced many things with the Rhone club which he joined at the age of eleven. The midfielder who revealed himself in 2020 under the orders of Rudi Garcia, notably with a big Final 8 in the Champions League, then continued with four full years with OL. But that got worse with a more mixed 2024/2025 financial year on his part. Passed behind Nemanja Matic and Corentin Tolisso in Pierre Sage’s double pivot, he left the Lyonnais in the winter of 2025 to join Como, then promoted to Serie A. Ambitious, Cesc Fabregas’ club then took the gamble by paying 15 million euros. Valuable in easily maintaining the Lombards in the elite for his first half-season, he followed up with a solid 2025/2026 exercise even if his role was not really that of an indisputable one.

The native of VĂ©nissieux certainly played 36 matches for 2 goals and 6 assists, but he only started 21 matches for 15 appearances. However, he felt good progress under the orders of Cesc Fabregas as he revealed to us: “I think that the point on which I have progressed the most, in any case where he advised me the most, is in the continuity of the game. Let me explain. I know how to better manage the tempos of a match and I know when to come and ask for the ball lower down or wait for the ball in areas. He often asks me to be patient when I play higher up because I’m obviously a player who likes to have the ball, but it’s not always the right option to come and get it at the feet. So sometimes you have to be patient. It’s something he asked me a lot and I think I’m getting better and better in this position. This is really the advice that has been the most useful in my way of playing.»

No Champions League, the French team still at a distance

Fourth in Serie A last season, Como took another step forward and qualified for the Champions League. Enough to give a glimpse of great things to the man who revealed himself six years ago in this competition: “It was something exceptional. Nobody expects a club like Como in the Champions League, especially after two seasons in Serie A. It was a magnificent moment. The group had an incredible season and I really think it’s deserved. We deserved this place. It was an incredible moment. I can’t wait to play the Champions League again. I had the chance to play with OL and they were wonderful moments. It is the Holy Grail of European football. So it’s just a pleasure for a player to play in this competition and I hope we will have the opportunity to do great things.” However, the 2026/2027 season has not started in the best way for Maxence Caqueret.

If he continues to have playing time with five matches played out of six in Serie A (4 appearances), he was not put on the Champions League list, paying for the strong competition. Thus, he has to deal with Luis Milla, Adrian Lahdo, Lucas Da Cunha, Samuele Ricci and Maximo Perrone in his playing sector. After Como’s 4-1 victory against RB Leipzig on the first day of the Champions League, Cesc Fabregas had thought of him: “today for example, I would like to dedicate this victory to Caqueret. To a player who was not with us, but who is essential for the future and present of this team. He plays an essential role on a daily basis, because the players think highly of him. I respect him a lot too. It’s important to recognize that it wasn’t a sporting choice, in the sense that it wasn’t that he didn’t deserve it. He was penalized a little because there were too many players in this specific position. This is perhaps where a little more space could be given. But it saddens me not to see Max today. I repeat, it was a choice linked to the number and the position in which he plays which was too crowded. However, these players are very important to us. In the championship and Coppa Italia, they become essential.»

Furthermore, Maxence Caqueret retains the idea of playing for the French team one day. Author of 24 appearances (4 goals) with the Espoirs, he has not yet been called up and told us of his desire to one day join the Blues: “of course, it’s always a goal that I have in mind. The French team makes everyone dream. Beyond being a dream, it’s really a goal for me. Afterwards, of course, it requires good performances, good results with my team. But of course I’m trying to do everything I can to achieve this goal in the future.» For the moment, things are not really improving given his situation, but there is reason to keep his hope alive since two of his teammates were lucky enough to be in Zinedine Zidane’s plans. Lucas Da Cunha played three matches with the Tricolores when Jean Butez remained on the bench, but was able to rub shoulders with the selection as third goalkeeper. A frustrating situation in the Champions League and a French team which remains at bay for Maxence Caqueret for the moment. Nonetheless, the 26-year-old will have a whole Serie A season to turn things around with Como.
