After the 2026 World Cup to conclude his 14-year mandate as France team coach, Didier Deschamps left for a sabbatical. However, his name comes back insistently in Türkiye.

But what is happening with Didier Deschamps in Türkiye? The coach of the French team for 14 years, from 2012 to the 2026 World Cup in North America, was asked last summer to take over the reins of the Turkish selection, as indicated Le Figaro. However, the coach of the 2018 world champions (and 2022 World Cup finalist), if he wishes to continue his career as a technician at the age of 57, refused the proposal from the Bosphorus. He wants to take advantage of a leave of several months before possibly embarking on a new adventure next summer.

Vincenzo Montella was thus kept at the head of the Turkish team last summer but four defeats in a row in the League of Nations, against the French team, Italy twice and Belgium, led to the ousting of the Italian coach. Arda Turan was quickly announced as the main favorite for the bench but the former midfielder is stationed at Shakhtar Donetsk and the Ukrainian club does not agree to release its current coach without compensation.

Deschamps against Nagelsmann?

Deschamps is thus cited among the foreign coaches likely to lead the team led by Arda Güler by the second national daily Hurriyet. In addition to the Basque, two technicians are cited: Julian Nagelsmann, the former strategist of Leipzig, coach of Bayern and less convincing coach of Germany during the last World Cup, as well as Vitor Pereira, double champion of Portugal with FC Porto and spent by Fenerbahçe in 2015-2016 and 2021.

Seeing “La Dèche” take up the Turkish challenge, in a country where football unleashes passions, seems highly improbable, since the selection concerned has nothing to do with a European big name. Especially since Turkey will conclude the group stage of the League of Nations with a second meeting against Zinédine Zidane’s France, on November 15 in Bordeaux. If Didier Deschamps becomes Turkey coach, it will certainly not be in the coming weeks…
