Revealed at Saint-Étienne very early thanks to his early maturity and impressive defensive qualities, Wesley Fofana quickly established himself as one of the most promising central defenders of his generation. Quickly joining England after a short season with the professionals in Forez, Fofana signed with Leicester. His impressive spell with the Foxes in the Premier League confirmed his immense potential, convincing Chelsea to spend slightly more than 80 million euros in the summer of 2022 to make him the pillar of their defensive hinge in the following years.

However, the French defender’s trajectory in London has not been that expected so far. Accumulating physical problems and a serious rupture of the cruciate ligaments, Fofana has missed 124 matches in the Blues jersey since his arrival and has been unable to meet the enormous expectations placed on him. Each return to the field suggested qualities of anticipation and aggression, but his consistency at the highest level remained compromised for a long time by too many physical uncertainties.

Chelsea finally have a 100% Wesley Fofana

Now aged 25, the native of Marseille finally seems to have chased away his demons and found the consistency that he was so lacking. Already the author of a 38-match season last year, he seems liberated on a physical level and spared from injuries at the start of the season. From then on, Wesley Fofana started one after another and regained the explosiveness, aerial domination and sharpness in duels which made him one of the most feared defenders in the English championship. Within the tactical organization set up by Xabi Alonso at Chelsea, whether in a 3 or 4 defense, the Frenchman has become a real cornerstone in the eyes of the Spanish coach. Alongside Maxence Lacroix, Levi Colwill and Josh Acheampong, Fofana has become indisputable.

Before the arrival of the latter, Fofana had also praised the confidence that Alonso could give to the residents of Stamford Bridge: “I think everyone knows we need stability. We talked about it last season with the directors and they said the same thing. Of course we need results (…), but we need stability and I think he (Xabi Alonso) is the right person for that.» His ability to restart cleanly under pressure and his authority inevitably seduce Alonso, who reciprocates this confidence. Solid, serene and once again at the top of his art, Wesley Fofana finally confirms all his talent and establishes himself as one of the strong men of the London project this season. A reality that he had always known to apply regardless of his coach at Chelsea in the past, who always placed him as an indisputable member of the eleven.
