Time seems to be on Gianni Infantino’s side. And yet the summer weather has not been good above the smooth skull of the FIFA president. Singled out for having considered selling shares of the World Cup to private investors, the leader suffered severe criticism and even faced a revolt orchestrated in particular by UEFA. But he held on to his chair. And as the election for FIFA president approaches, he remains the only candidate.
It is during the 77th FIFA Congress that this election will take place. March 18, 2027 to be exact, near the Moroccan city of Rabat. Gianni Infantino has long announced that he would run again. In office since 2016 after taking advantage of the legal setbacks of his former boss at UEFA, Michel Platini, the Italian-Swiss-Lebanese dreams of continuing his mission for four more years.
And for the moment, he is well on his way to achieving his objective since no candidate is running against him. Since the start of the revolt against him, several names have been mentioned, with UEFA notably seeking the best candidate to place opposite him. But without success so far.
Gianni Infantino, his potential opponents have until November 18
Last potential opponent, Victor Montagliani should not go into combat, according to information from England, and in particular from the BBC. The Canadian would prefer to keep his position by seeking a new mandate at the top of the Confederation of North American Football (CONCACAF).
Another name cited is that of the former Swiss international footballer, Ramon Vega. The latter even announced on Wednesday that he was seriously considering entering the race for the presidency of FIFA. Still not in possession of the sponsorships to be a candidate, according to L’Équipe, Ramon Vega is currently seen as a “small” candidate a priori not dangerous enough to counter Gianni Infantino. In any case, for Ramon Vega and for those who want to register for the election, the deadline for submitting candidacies is set for November 18.
