Manchester City is in turmoil and the soap opera has only just begun. Indeed, the verdict rendered in the case of 115 alleged financial offenses by Skyblues now opens a new front for the English club, namely that of compensation. After the conclusion of the procedure, which would have found City guilty of the vast majority of the breaches examined (114 out of 115), several competitors are now considering claiming compensation for the sporting and financial damage they believe they have suffered. According to the latest information from Daily Mailthe bill could ultimately be very steep when the Mancunian club has already announced its intention to appeal.
Among the clubs likely to take steps, we find in particular Tottenham, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton, Sunderland and even Arsenal, who had preserved their rights to possible compensation. The principle would in particular be to claim income linked to European places, titles or rankings which these teams believe to have been deprived of due to City’s performances during the period in question. Please note, however, that these procedures remain distinct and must precisely demonstrate the existence and amount of the damage.
Tottenham, the big loser
One thing is certain, Tottenham could be particularly concerned, with several Champions League campaigns potentially at the heart of their request. The British media indicates, in this regard, that Spurs would have missed out on at least 100 million pounds sterling (116 million euros). Manchester United could also claim missed titles and European qualification, while Liverpool, Everton and Arsenal could claim compensation linked to European qualifications or ranking positions. During the 2013-2014 season, the Reds, for example, lost big by narrowly missing the Premier League title and could have qualified for the Europa League by winning the League Cup in 2016.
Worse still, if the Liverpool team had won the title, nearly 40 million euros in prize money would have entered the club’s coffers. Same observation in 2010-2011 after finishing 6th in the championship. You will have understood, the affair seems to take on a new financial dimension and Manchester City – which already fears losing many players in the event of sanctions confirmed – could have to face the individual demands of several competitors. According to an estimate published after the verdict, potential demands could even reach more than £600 million in total, or around €690 million. Enough to measure, a little more, the possible consequences of this affair…
