The large family of Olympique de Marseille mourns one of the most illustrious attackers of the Marseille club. Daily life Provence announced Monday the death of Joseph Yegba Maya, who died the day before at the age of 82 following an illness.
Having played for OM from 1962 to 1970, the Cameroonian played 236 matches in the Olympian jersey and scored 113 goals. A total which makes him the seventh best director in the history of Ciel et Blanc, behind Gunnar Anderson, Jean-Pierre Papin and Josip Skoblar.
The native of Otélé arrived in the Marseille city in 1960, at the age of 16. Then a mechanic at the SNCF, he played for two seasons in the amateur club Gallia Chutes-Lavie before catching the eye of OM, residents of the second division at that time.
A rise and a Coupe de France with OM
During his eight seasons spent in Marseille, “Joseph” participated in the return to Division 1 in 1966 and the victory in the Coupe de France in 1969, notably scoring his team’s second goal in the final against the Girondins de Bordeaux.
The following year, he was transferred to Valenciennes in an exchange for Daniel Leclercq. The former Indomitable Lion (25 caps, 10 goals) then wore the colors of Strasbourg and Béziers, where he hung up his boots in 1976.
