Legend of the Greens, Michel Platini has fond memories of his time with Saint-Etienne.

“Here, he will remain a legend of the Greens. »
The words are those of Régis Juanico, the mayor of Saint-Etienne, who had the pleasure of meeting Michel Platini this weekend during a charity golf tournament organized by Christian Lopez and his wife Sylvana for their association Vert for ever.

An event that “Platoche”, who spent three seasons at ASSE (from 1979 to 1982), could not miss. The Forézien club is celebrating the 50th this yeare anniversary of his epic journey to the final of the European Cup, and even if he was not there yet, the former Nancy player had vibrated.

“I was in the army. With the entire French military team, we watched Saint-Étiennehe remembers in the columns of the regional daily THE Progress. It’s not just 1976, it’s also 1975, 1974. Those years were fabulous epics that made all of France dream. »

Michel Platini: “There is a Saint-Etienne soul”

And this is precisely what motivated the triple Ballon d’Or to join Saint-Etienne after ASNL. “With Nancy, we played mid-table. In Saint-Etienne, we always played to win”he confides, also remembering falling under the spell of the Saint-Etienne region.

“What I liked was the friendly city, the kindness of the people, the traders and the public. I found a warm region, loving football. Behind it, there is a Saint-Etienne soul. It was something exciting, I had a good time there”he remembers.

Before joining Juventus Turin, the former number 10 of the Blues (71 years old) only won one title in the green jersey: that of champion of France, in 1981. “It was my first title in France”he said. The tenth and until now last for ASSE, which now plays in Ligue 2.
