3 billion and 480 million pounds. That is 4 billion and 60 M€ euros. This is the new record total amount spent by Premier League clubs during this summer transfer window. The last record dated from… last year, with the 4 billion mark already crossed. A completely crazy last day, with the transfer for €145 million of Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City (the biggest transfer in the history of the PL with Alexander Isak last season), made it possible to reach this astronomical sum.
Moreover, the “deadline day” was also a record, beating that of last year, with 475 million pounds disbursed, or €554 million! The biggest spending club was Manchester City, which paid three midfielders for monstrous sums, with Elliot Anderson (€135 million), Ayyoub Bouaddi (€100 million) and Enzo Fernandez (€145 million), in addition to Illiman Ndiaye (€70 million) and the Brazilian winger Allan (€37.5 million). Behind, we find the regular Chelsea, who however present the best balance since they finished the transfer window in the green, with almost 80 M€ in their pockets, despite 400 M€ disbursed in the direction of arrivals.
A communicative spending madness
The surprise comes from Tottenham, the 3rd biggest spending club, followed by Newcastle, Aston Villa, Liverpool and… Ipswich. The promoted club spent €245 million, more than Arsenal and Manchester United in the Premier League, than FC Barcelona or PSG. The financial power of the PL can be judged particularly on this, with those promoted capable of sending crazy sums, which will make any Ligue 1 club crack. Hull and Ipswich have notably drawn into Ligue 1 this summer.
The spending spree of English clubs therefore continued this year, with 11 clubs out of 20 breaking their transfer records during this window. And the money circulates between them, because 35% of deals were made between Premier League clubs, and in particular the biggest ones this offseason (Enzo Fernandez, Morgan Rogers, Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali), with only Barcola breaking into this category. These 5 names previously mentioned also enter directly into the Top 10 of the biggest transfers in the history of the Premier League. One last stat? The English championship recorded a total of 154 transfers this summer.
