After 25 years of waiting, Coventry City will return to the Premier League with an ambition very different from that of a simple promoted player who came to take advantage of the moment. The Sky Blues made history last season by largely dominating the Championship, winning the title with more than 10 points ahead of Ipswich Town and Millwall. An exceptional performance achieved under the leadership of Frank Lampard, who definitively relaunched his coaching career after more complicated stints on the benches of Chelsea and Everton. By joining the English elite, the former midfielder knows, however, that the hardest part now begins: building a team capable of competing with the championship behemoths and avoiding an immediate return to the second division.
This rise has a particular flavor for Lampard, who has experienced one of the strongest moments of his young coaching career. After the draw obtained on the pitch of Blackburn (1-1), synonymous with promotion thanks to the late equalizer from Bobby Thomas, the English technician did not hide his emotion in front of the media: “I’m proud. Sometimes all the coaches only talk about the players, but I’m proud, and I’m proud of myself, the staff and the boys. » The former Blues coach then insisted on the exceptional dimension of this adventure: “so this is one of my greatest accomplishments. Frank Lampard wants to keep his executives
But so as not to transform this magnificent story into a simple brief stint in the elite, Coventry is already preparing its major summer project. The priority is clear: to offer Lampard a squad capable of fighting in a championship where the promoted often have to invest massively to survive. The three-year contract extension of the English technician was a first strong signal, although his future had nevertheless raised some questions after the title. Some Premier League clubs, notably Fulham and Crystal Palace, were monitoring his situation, but Coventry managed to keep the one who gave a new dimension to the project. From now on, Lampard is waiting for sporting guarantees and wants to see his group strengthened before the transfer window closes. Among the priority issues are the retention of executives, with Haji Wright and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto arriving in their last year of contract, while Jack Rudoni should also receive an upgrade after an exceptional season.

The role of Dean Austin will therefore be essential. Promoted to sports director, he is considered one of the major architects of the club’s recent success. Finally, Coventry does not just prepare its team on the pitch. The club is working on a global transformation of its infrastructure to meet the standards of the English elite. The CBS Arena will undergo several improvements, including to accommodate more visiting supporters, strengthen media spaces and modernize digital facilities, with an estimated investment of around €10 million. The training center must also continue to evolve to meet the demands of the highest level, while the club develops its commercial image with new partnerships and a new store at the stadium.
