The Paraguayan Senate adopted a motion against the racist remarks made by Celeste Amarilla against Kylian Mbappé. The upper house of Congress debated for five hours the outings of the 61-year-old lawyer, who notably described the French captain as “Colonized Cameroonian” and made other discriminatory remarks. At the end of the deliberations, the majority of senators firmly rejected all forms of racism and discrimination, specifying that Amarilla’s remarks did not reflect the general opinion of the Senate, reports The Parisian.
Despite this condemnation, some of the senator’s colleagues expressed their support. Yolanda Peres, for example, had accused Mbappé of being himself “ racist and xenophobic » and increased the number of offensive remarks, going as far as humiliating comparisons. Amarilla subsequently tried to justify his words without returning to the content. The affair sparked strong international indignation and relaunched the debate on racism in sport.
