This is a fairly astonishing transfer for the English champions. Indeed, the Gunners are about to offer themselves the French goalkeeper Illan Meslier, free of any contract after his departure from Leeds United, informs The Athletic. The 26-year-old French goalkeeper still has to undergo his medical examination before being officially announced by the London club, but has already agreed to join the ranks of the London club and be among the competitors of David Raya, Mikel Arteta’s starting goalkeeper.
After 215 matches played in seven seasons under the colors of the Peacocks, Meslier lost his starting place during the 2024-2025 financial year due to performances deemed too irregular by Daniel Farke. While Lucas Perri was recruited for 15 million euros this summer and Karl Darlow had caused a sensation, the French goalkeeper was quickly demoted by the German coach. His last match with the Peacocks dates back to a draw against Swansea City in March 2025, putting an end to an adventure where he had been undisputed number one for several seasons.
Illan Meslier arrives as third goalkeeper
Arriving at the time of Marcelo Bielsa, Illan Meslier was therefore invited to find a new challenge. It was a time close to Turkey last winter and we explained to you last summer that Lorient was carefully observing the prospect of a comeback from the club’s child. But he will ultimately continue the adventure in the Gunners rotation. On the Arsenal side, this arrival would not call into question the hierarchy of goalkeepers. David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga, whose future under the colors of the Gunners is still uncertain, will remain Mikel Arteta’s main options.
Meslier would thus strengthen the depth of the squad with his significant experience in the English championship in order to allow younger goalkeepers to go on loan. This operation could, in fact, benefit Tommy Setford. Considered one of the club’s goalkeepers of the future, the England U21 international should be loaned out in order to obtain more playing time. Arsenal believes that this solution is the most suited to his development, while the arrival of Meslier would ensure a quality rotation at a lower cost.
