Spending madness to make you forget a nightmarish season. As expected for several days, Tottenham announced the signing of Sandro Tonali for a record amount in the club’s history. Spurs paid no less than 115 million euros (approximately 100 + 15 bonus) to attract the Newcastle midfielder, who arrived in England in 2023 from AC Milan.
Tonali thus becomes Spurs’ biggest transfer, ahead of Xavi Simons (65 million euros), Dominic Solanke (64 million euros), Mohammed Kudus (63 million euros), or even Tanguy Ndombele (62 million euros). An agreement was also reached for the transfer of Mateus Fernandes, who arrived from West Ham for 98 million euros. “We are delighted to announce the signing of Sandro Tonali, subject to obtaining a work permit. The 26-year-old Italian international midfielder joins us from Newcastle United »specifies the Tottenham press release this Monday noon.
Already almost 300 million euros in spending
Having come close to relegation to the Championship after a terrifying 17th place, Tottenham immediately embarked on their recovery operation. The London club has already spent 60 million euros for Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke (Brighton), and also attracted Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi, both free after the end of their contracts at Liverpool and Bournemouth.
It is expected that the club will also recover around sixty million euros with the upcoming sale of the very promising Luka Vušković to Brighton. Suffice it to say that London’s leaders have set to work to regain their rank. And it is not excluded that the arrival of Tonali will call for others, to the great happiness of Roberto De Zerbi.
