Tottenham are preparing to strike a second huge blow in the transfer market. After coming close to relegation last season, the London club is working this summer to strengthen itself and once again become a credible competitor for European places in the Premier League. After having already freely attracted Andy Robertson and Marco Senesi, then Jean-Paul van Hecke for 61 million euros, Tottenham completed the arrival of Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes in exchange for 98 million euros. But the Lusitanian, who is yet to officially sign, has already lost his status as the most expensive recruit in Spurs history.

Because the London club will offer itself one of the most highly rated midfielders in the English championship. According to The Athletican agreement was reached this Wednesday between Newcastle and Spurs for the transfer of Sandro Tonali. Spurs will pay 107 million euros, to which can be added 8 million euros in bonuses linked to several Champions League qualifications, to secure the services of the former AC Milan player.

The most expensive player in Tottenham history

Recruited by Newcastle in the summer of 2023, Tonali had a mixed spell with the Magpies. Suspended ten months in his first season for violating the rules relating to sports betting, he then made his return to the field in August 2024. The 26-year-old midfielder played 110 games in total in the colors of the Magpies, scoring 10 goals and delivering 10 assists and establishing himself as an essential element of the midfield alongside Bruno Guimarães.

Author of 53 appearances in all competitions this season, the Italian international (32 caps) reinforces a very well-stocked environment quantitatively, but which struggles to provide satisfaction. He joins Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, even if the Swede has indicated that he wants to leave the club this summer. Also coveted by Manchester City, Tonali finally favored the Spurs project, which will make him the most expensive player in their history. Roberto De Zerbi, for his part, is preparing to welcome quality reinforcement in anticipation of the 2026/2027 season.
