Only a few days left before the start of the 2026 World Cup. A competition which will mark the end of the Didier Deschamps era at the head of the French team, after 14 years of good and loyal service. The 57-year-old coach will try to finish his adventure with the Blues by winning a third World Cup, his second on the bench. In an interview published by La Gazzetta dello Sport this Sunday, the former OM coach answered the famous question about the status of favorites of the French. And even if he does not deny that France will be expected, DD nevertheless believes that other teams also have this status.

Favorite France? One of the favorites. But the word “favorite” is not taboo. This status is logical and legitimate, because it depends on what we have accomplished so far, the quality of the players, the FIFA ranking, where we have been among the top three since 2018. The important thing is not to consider that everything is a foregone conclusion, nor that we have an appointment in the final on July 19. There will be difficult times during the World Cup. Ambition is important, but at the highest level, there is no mercy for anyone. (…) We experienced it during the Euro against Switzerland. Other favorites? Spain, which, with Luis de la Fuente, added speed to its possession of the ball… Germany, a great football nation, for the quality of its players. Just like Tuchel’s England, which I really like. Portugal, not to be underestimated. Argentina and Brazil. And why not Morocco, constantly progressing “, said Deschamps.
