Florentino Pérez is playing very big this week. On Sunday, the members of Real Madrid will choose their president, and the current boss of the club is opposed to Enrique Riquelme, who is occupying a lot of media space in Spain and who is convincing people. If Pérez remains favorite according to the polls, he knows that a misstep could cost him dearly, and there are several issues which are divisive at the moment on the Castellana side. The opening of the club’s capital to external investors for example, which is one of its mainstays, while Riquelme is clearly opposed to it.

Another tense and divisive subject: Kylian Mbappé, who was discussed again this weekend after PSG’s European coronation. There is no point going back to all the controversies of the season, as they are still present in everyone’s minds. But for the moment, the forcing and stubbornness of Pérez to bring the Bondynois to Madrid are doing him more harm than good. In a long interview given to El Paíshe was logically asked about the French striker.

Pérez blames the media

He notably accused journalists of being at the origin of the whistles against the player and the tension that exists around him. “There are journalists… You don’t know how mean you are when you write. And some believe it. But the real madridista must defend his players. If one day he has a bad match, we have to support him. This season, some (journalists) have created a very bad influence among the public”he first indicated, before focusing on the sporting side.

“Mbappé played in a position that was not his at PSG. And that also confused him a little. We will correct things that we think we did wrong. We have very good players, others will come. That’s all. We must not blame the bad season on the coaches or the players”he indicated, adding that he was convinced that Vinicius Jr and Mbappé could succeed in getting along on the pitch. A media release that Real Madrid number 10 will appreciate. Will Merengue fans be convinced on their side? Not sure…
