It’s almost the end for Didier Deschamps. In office since 2012, the native of Bayonne is preparing to compete in his last major competition with the French team, before bowing out.
Before this 2026 World Cup, where the Blues will try to win a third star, the French coach received a very nice tribute signed by Emmanuel Macron, who is full of praise for him. “I have always been struck by this strength of character that we sense in him as soon as we meet his gaze”confides the President of the Republic in a text addressed to West France.
Macron praises Deschamps, with well-chosen words
Emmanuel Macron admits to having excellent memories of the 2018 World Cup, one of the first great (positive) moments of his mandate. “I haven’t forgotten anything about 2018. The thrills of Argentina, ‘second post Pavard’, N’Golo Kanté and Kylian Mbappé, the final in Moscow, a sparkling summer which lifted us with happiness. Didier Deschamps finally brought the cup home. As always, he knew how to transform dreams into victories, and preferred success to hopes. Didier Deschamps truly embodies a French spirit that never gives up. So many of our compatriots have learned to love this style that prefers to win rather than please,” summarizes the head of state, who is perhaps trying to send a message about him.
Emmanuel Macron ends by confiding that he regrets that the coach is handing over. “Like every French person, I will miss ‘DD’, his quiet strength, his calm in the face of adversity, his exceptional human qualities, his personal and generous commitment to the Yellow Pieces (alongside Brigitte Macron, editor’s note). From Clairefontaine to the Élysée, from Moscow to Marseille, he was the coach of happy days for us. »
