At 40, Luka Modric is closer to retiring after the 2026 World Cup than to an extension with AC Milan.

All good things must come to an end, as the saying goes. Summoned by Zlatko Dalic to participate in the next World Cup with Croatia – his fifth – the midfielder could play the final minutes of his great professional career.

Indeed, according to the information from the Gazzetta dello Sportthe Croatian plans to retire at the end of the 2026 World Cup. It must be said that at almost 41 years old, patience is no longer the same. Especially the day after AC Milan’s home debacle against Cagliari (1-2) on Sunday, depriving the team of participation in the next Champions League.

At the end of his contract on June 30, Modric has an option for an additional year, while his management wishes to keep him. But the dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri, with whom he had very good relations, could convince him not to continue the adventure in a club in the midst of an internal revolution.

Modric on departure, Rabiot too?

Obviously, the retirement of the former Madrilenian would be a great loss for the Rossoneri, as his impact was significant on the club’s style of play. His 37 matches played out of 42 possible this season bear witness to this.

Without forgetting that the midfield also risks being orphaned by Adrien Rabiot next season. The French midfielder would also have had a bad experience with the situation around the Italian tactician, and would therefore not be certain of staying in Lombardy, again according to the pink paper newspaper.
