It’s a fairly complicated season which has finally ended for Real Madrid. Yet another season, the Merengues saw FC Barcelona dominate La Liga, just as they failed to go far in the Champions League. Poor results and very limited content in the game which cost Xabi Alonso his head, then Alvaro Arbeloa, who will not continue next season. Worse still, the season was marked by various extra-sporting concerns, with wars in the locker room, between players and coaches and sometimes between players themselves, and a Kylian Mbappé who didn’t help anything.
And the next few weeks will be very lively, with the holding of presidential elections, and members who will have to choose between Enrique Riquelme and Florentino Pérez from June 7. Until then, everyone will put forward their arguments and their strengths to convince people to vote for them. And what is certain is that Pérez already has a big advantage after the publication of the club’s accounts – unofficially – in the newspaper A.S..
A cash machine
We learn that Real Madrid will make a record turnover, with forecasts exceeding 1.2 billion euros. A sum that had never been reached in the history of football. And this, despite the absence of income linked to winning titles or long runs in the Champions League. On the other hand, participation in the last Club World Cup, and the increased income linked to post-work ticketing at the Santiago Bernabéu have boosted the club’s turnover this season. The organization of an NFL match in the Madrid arena also played a role.
New records could soon be broken by the Merengues, with negotiations with Adidas for an upwardly revised contract for example. Figures which testify to the good financial health of the club and its capacity to generate money, even if here too, we should not confuse turnover and profits. One more line on Florentino Pérez’s pretty CV to win against Enrique Riquelme.
