After a little less than four years spent on the Moroccan sidelines, Walid Regragui has decided to leave. At the end of CAN 2025 – won on the field by Senegal (1-0), but ultimately awarded to the Atlas Lions on the green carpet – the 50-year-old technician resigned, which was accepted by the Moroccan Federation a few weeks later.
The departure of Walid Regragui noted, the FRMF formalized his successor, Mohamed Ouahbi, at the beginning of March. Winner of the U20 World Cup with Morocco last October, the Belgian-Moroccan coach is now preparing to compete in the 2026 World Cup at the head of the first team.
On the sidelines of the event, Mohamed Ouahbi spoke to Kelma Poadcast. On this occasion, he paid a very nice tribute to his predecessor. “ If I was given the choice between Walid Regragui and Pep Guardiola, I would choose Regragui… because Guardiola never made me cry “, said the 49-year-old coach.
What future for Walid Regragui?
Mohamed Ouahbi is undoubtedly referring to the emotions given to the Moroccan people by Walid Regragui’s troop during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Indeed, Achraf Hakimi and his partners managed to reach the semi-final, after defeating Spain and Portugal. A feat never seen before in the history of African football.
Free from any contract, Walid Regragui would like to find a bench for next season. Once announced on the shelves of Ghana and Saudi Arabia, who will both play in the 2026 World Cup, the native of Corbeil-Essonnes has also seen his name circulate among OM and even Real Madrid. Several Saudi clubs are also said to be interested in his services.
