At 36, César Azpilicueta decided to hang up his crampons. Passed by Osasuna, Olympique de Marseille, Chelsea, Atlético de Madrid and Sevilla FC, the Spanish full-back published a message on his networks to announce that he was bowing out. In a 20-year career, “Azpi” has notably won a Champions League, a European Super Cup, a Club World Cup, two Europa Leagues and two Premier Leagues.

“Dear football, today I would like to announce that this season will be my last as a professional footballer. After so many years of living my dream, I feel like it’s time for me to start a new chapter in my life. To be honest, even though I prepared for this moment, I had a hard time writing this letter. During these 20 seasons, many people have played an important role in my career. When I kicked a ball for the first time as a child in Pamplona with my classmates, I never imagined the incredible journey that awaited me. I’m grateful for every moment: the victories, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way. To my teammates, my coaches and all the staff members of all the clubs I have been lucky enough to be a part of, thank you for helping me grow every day as a person and as a player. Wearing the jerseys of CA Osasuna, Olympique de Marseille, Chelsea FC, Atlético de Madrid and Sevilla FC, and representing my country on the biggest stages has been a true privilege. Every moment meant a lot to me…”
