The (very) beautiful story of Pep Guardiola with the Citizens risks ending in failure. Thanks to its minimalist victory against Burnley (1-0) on Monday, Arsenal moved a little closer to their first English championship title in more than twenty years. Expected this Tuesday evening on the Bournemouth pitch, Manchester City risks having to settle for second place.
The FA Cup won on Saturday against Chelsea, two months after the League Cup, should therefore remain the last trophy won by Pep Guardiola. According to the English press, the Spanish technician, although under contract until June 2027, is indeed preparing to say goodbye to Manchester City and the Premier League.
Arriving at the Skyblues in the summer of 2016, the former midfielder allowed the other Manchester club to become a real powerhouse in England, accumulating no less than six league titles, but also three English Cups, five League Cups and above all a Champions League. In total, Pep Guardiola won no less than twenty trophies during this decade at the head of Manchester City.
Enzo Maresca to succeed him?
To believe the New York Timesthe Mancunian leaders have also already found his successor. Enzo Maresca, fired at the start of winter by Chelsea just a few months after allowing the London club to win the Club World Cup, should be the lucky one. The task will not be easy for the Italian technician, who revealed himself only two seasons ago with Leicester, in the Championship.
As for the future of Pep Guradiola, it remains uncertain. “ After my contract with (Manchester) City, I’m going to stop. I’m sure of it. I don’t know if I’m going to retire, but I’m going to take a break,” he nevertheless confided last summer to ESPN.
