As the 2026 World Cup approaches, Senegal could welcome an unexpected reinforcement.

One month before the World Cup, the different selections are already starting to refine their plans. Organized from June 11 to July 19, 2026 in the United States, Canada and Mexico, this edition will mark a historic turning point with the participation of 48 nations, compared to 32 during previous tournaments. A competition where Senegal once again hopes to play spoilsport.

The situation in Malang Sarr could indeed experience an important turning point in the coming weeks. Author of a convincing season with RC Lens, the 27-year-old defender would appear in Senegal’s extended pre-list for the World Cup. Coach Pape Thiaw must announce his final list on May 21.

“A question of timing”

According to information from DSPORTS, his recent performances would have convinced the staff of the Lions of Teranga to include him in a first expanded list. Already questioned about his case last March, Pape Thiaw had also left the door open to a future summons: “Today, I think I’ve been saying it for quite a long time: selection is a question of timing. So Malang Sarr, we follow him, and he gives great performances, even extraordinary ones. »

Despite this sporting revival, the Malang Sarr issue remains sensitive in Senegal. In 2021, while playing at Chelsea, the defender rejected a first approach from the Senegalese federation. It was only in 2025 that the player began to publicly show his interest in the Lions, a turnaround which continues to raise questions among some supporters.
