While he has already announced his departure from Olympique de Marseille, Medhi Benatia could ultimately be offered a new position.

Announced about leaving since February, Medhi Benatia finally agreed to stay at Olympique de Marseille until the end of the season, at the request of Frank McCourt. The former Moroccan international, who notably validated the arrival of Habib Beye to succeed Roberto De Zerbi, is however going through a more tense period internally.

His management is increasingly contested within the locker room, where relations have cooled with several players, including Mason Greenwood. Despite this climate, the former Bayern Munich defender retains an important place in the club’s decision-making circles.

Its influence remains in fact real on certain strategic choices, in particular that of the future sports director. A major issue on which he continues to give his opinion. According to L’Équipe, Medhi Benatia would have notably supported the candidacy of Grégory Lorenzi, on the departure of Stade Brestois.

A new role for Benatia?

Still according to the sports daily, the Moroccan leader would also consider a role as external consultant with the future OM organization, played by Stéphane Richard alongside Lorenzi. Information that the person concerned refutes, ensuring
“with a wave of the hand” that he will definitely leave the club on May 20.

On the OM side, the objective is now to quickly finalize the arrival of Grégory Lorenzi in order to launch a new cycle. The first project will already be substantial: appoint a new coach, since unless the situation turns around, Habib Beye should not be extended after not having achieved the set objective, a place on the qualifying podium for the Champions League.
